An Australian man has been shot dead and his girlfriend gang-rape while they were on a holiday in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
The 53-year-old man, who is believed to be from Melbourne, died on the scene of the attack after being shot at a close range on Monday when a group of 10 men confronted the couple at a coffee plantation just out of Port Moresby in Mount Hagen.
The man's girlfriend, who is from the Philippines, was taken to Mount Hagen hospital for treatment.
"Investigation for the motive of shooting this innocent Australian is underway by PNG Authorities as well as the identify of the killers." Highlands divisional commander Teddy Tei said.
Tei said the killers did not take any valuables from the scene and could not rule out whether the owner away in Sydney was the main target and the 53-year-old could have been mistaken for him.
"This is inhumane," Tei said. "We are investigating this very serious incident which likely to have severe consequences on the country's image.
