Man Dies After He Wins Beer Competition

A man has died after downing six litres of beer in a drinking competition at a beer festival in Spain.

Joaquin Alcaraz Garcia started vomiting in his chair moments after winning the July 18 competition, in which contestants had to drink as many litre glasses of beer as they could in 20 minutes.

"He had drunk six litres of beer, and when he won he lifted the trophy" witness Antonia Alcaraz told the Spanish newspaper Hoy.

"Then he just started to vomit without stopping and he never spoke again," Mr Alcaraz said.

Bystanders rushed to help Mr Garcia and held him upright as he was sick. Then he slumped over.

Municipality vice president Pedro Rodriguez said he thought the drinking champion was sleeping.

"He vomited a lot but I sat with him for ten-minutes and he was sleeping and snoring away," Mr Rodriguez said.

When emergency services arrived they found Mr Garcia in cardiac arrest and rushed him to hospital where he died a short time later.

Local mayor Jose Manuel Gracia told Hoy the cause of Mr Garcia's death was not yet clear and he defended the beer festival, saying it was a long held tradition.

Emergency service officials said the contestant was obese.

The festival has been suspended and local authorities have called for an official a three-day period of mourning.
