Yellow Cake Uranium

The government of Sierra Leone has issued a press release regarding the arrest of Patrick Campbell, who it was alleged, was in possession of Yellow Cake Uranium mineral when he was detained by US Immigration Officials. Worldwide media reports had claimed that Campbell was a Sierra Leonean.  Apparently, after thorough investigations by the government in Sierra Leone, it was discovered that the passport Campbell was carrying was fraudulentl acquired, and that he is a Nigerian national.
Below is the full press release issued by the government of Sierra Leone:

The attention of the Government of Sierra Leone has been drawn to a news item in the international media that one Patrick Campbell, traveling with a Sierra Leonean passport was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport, in the United States of America, on an Air France flight from Paris, France. He was arrested on the suspicion of carrying a sample of Uranium mineral, (U308-yellow cake). He claimed to have sourced the substance from Sierra Leone and was expecting to meet a contact in Miami for onward sale of a very large consignment, totaling one thousand tons (1,000 tons).

The Government treats this matter very seriously and immediately mounted a high level investigation involving, State House, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Information and Communications, Sierra Leone Police, Immigration Department and the Office of the Administrator and Registrar General.
Preliminary findings so far indicate that:
  1. The said Patrick Campbell is not a Sierra Leonean, but an apparent common criminal using a false name;
  2. There exists no uranium mines in all of Sierra Leone;
  3. Patrick Campbell’s journey to the United States of America originated from Lagos, Nigeria, on the airline, Arik Air and continued by Air France to New York where his arrest took place.
  4. The Sierra Leone passport he was arrested with, was first issued in Sierra Leone in the year 2004, through very dubious means which are now under active investigation.
Government wishes it to be known that it will spare no efforts in the continuing full-scale investigations into the whole matter which is being done in active collaboration with the United States Embassy in Freetown and the Nigerian High Commission in Freetown.
Any further information on this matter will be made public by the Government, as and when it becomes available.
